British and US officials spar over swift approval of vaccine

NEW YORK: British and American officials sparred on Thursday over how Britain had beaten the US to authorising a coronavirus vaccine. Dr Anthony Fauci, the US infectious diseases expert, said that British regulators had not scrutinised the data as carefully as their American counterparts in the FDA. “We have the gold standard of a regulatory approach with the FDA,”
Fauci said. “The UK did not do it as carefully and they got a couple of days ahead.” Gavin Williamson, UK’s education secretary, responded by saying that Britain’s “got the best medical regulators.” “Much better than the French have, much better than the Belgians have, much better than the Americans have. That doesn’t surprise me at all because we’re a much better country…”.
