MIAMI: Hurricane Sam was a strong Category 4 storm within the Atlantic Ocean, but forecasters mentioned late Sunday that it had peaked in depth.
Sam was centered well offshore from land, situated about 850 miles (1,365 kilometers) east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands, the U.S. National Hurricane Center mentioned in an advisory. It was touring northwest at 7 mph (11 kph).
Sam had most sustained winds of 145 mph (230 kph), making it a Category 4 hurricane. Forecasters mentioned there could be some fluctuations in its energy over the subsequent day or so, adopted by a gradual weakening.
